Are Electric Bikes Good Exercise for Seniors?
The short answer is yes—when the rider is pedaling.
On a pedal-assist ebike, the motor works with you rather than replacing your effort. How much exercise you get depends on the assistance selected, the route, your pace and fitness, and how much of the ride you spend pedaling.
What the Research Shows
A 2018 systematic review of 17 studies involving 300 participants found moderate evidence that pedal-assisted cycling can provide at least moderate-intensity physical activity.
The researchers found that e-cycling generally required less effort than conventional cycling but more than walking. They also found moderate evidence of improved cardiorespiratory fitness among previously inactive participants.
The evidence base was relatively small, however, and the authors considered the longer-term studies limited by weaknesses in design and quality. The review only included electric bikes that required pedaling before the motor provided assistance, so its conclusions should not be applied to throttle-only riding.
That distinction matters. The research supports pedal-assisted riding as physical activity; it does not tell us that sitting on an ebike and using the throttle provides the same benefit.
Research specifically focused on riders over 65 remains limited. The review supports the idea that ebiking can contribute to physical-activity goals, but it does not show that every ebike ride provides the same workout or produces the same health outcome.
How to Tell Whether Your Ride Is Moderate Exercise
The CDC’s talk test is a simple way to estimate relative intensity.
During moderate activity, you should generally be able to talk but not sing. During vigorous activity, you may only be able to say a few words before pausing for breath.
Because relative intensity depends on fitness, the same route may feel easy to one rider and demanding to another. Speed alone is also a poor measure on an ebike because the motor may be contributing different amounts of assistance.
Using Assistance Without Removing the Exercise
The goal is not always to use the lowest possible setting. Assistance is most useful when it helps you ride consistently without becoming exhausted or avoiding routes altogether.

1. A More Achievable Way to Stay Active
One of the biggest benefits of an ebike is that the rider can adjust the difficulty.
On a conventional bicycle, a steep hill or strong headwind may determine whether a ride feels possible. Electric assistance gives the rider another option: add support, continue moving, and reduce it again when the route becomes easier.
That flexibility can be especially valuable for someone returning to cycling, managing variable energy levels, or trying to become more active without treating every ride as a strenuous workout.
2. Lower-Impact Aerobic Activity
Cycling is generally classified as a lower-impact, non-weight-bearing activity.
According to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, cycling places less impact stress on weight-bearing joints than higher-impact activities such as running.
That does not mean cycling will be comfortable or appropriate for every joint condition. Saddle position, handlebar reach, resistance, cadence, and the rider’s individual condition can all affect comfort. Persistent or worsening pain is a reason to stop and seek professional advice.
3. More Manageable Hills, Wind, and Distance
This is often one of the first differences riders notice. A hill or headwind that might normally bring a ride to an early end becomes something they can manage by increasing the assistance.
The result is not necessarily a faster ride. For many people, it is simply a more predictable one.

Storage, locks, cargo, and the ability to move a heavier bike by hand are part of the decision too.
5. Confidence to Ride More Consistently
One concern we often hear is: “What happens if I get tired before I get home?”
Knowing that additional assistance is available can make that return journey feel less uncertain. It does not guarantee safety or remove the need to plan, but it may give riders the confidence to choose manageable routes and ride more consistently.
In the eight-week study discussed below, participants in the ebike group spent more time cycling each week on average than participants using conventional bicycles. The researchers noted that motor assistance may have encouraged longer riding, although the study was not designed to prove that assistance was the cause.
6. Opportunities for Social and Mental Well-Being
Cycling can create opportunities to spend time outdoors, ride with a spouse or friends, and participate in activities that may have become difficult on a conventional bike.
These experiences can be valuable even when a ride is short or recreational rather than transportation-focused.
What One Study Found About Cognition and Well-Being
In a 2019 study published in PLOS ONE, 100 adults ages 50 to 83 took part in a conventional cycling group, an ebike group, or a non-cycling control group.
For eight weeks, participants in both cycling groups were asked to ride at least three times per week for 30 minutes.
Compared with the control group, both cycling groups improved their accuracy on some executive-function measures. The ebike group also showed a relative improvement in one processing-speed measure and in the mental-health score of a health survey.
The study did not find improvements across every cognitive or well-being measure.
These findings are encouraging, but this was one short study. It does not establish that ebiking prevents dementia or produces lasting cognitive improvements.

Can Older Adults Ride Electric Bikes?
Many can, but there is no age-based answer that applies to everyone.
A person’s current abilities and the demands of the bike matter more than the number on a birthday card.
Balance and Low-Speed Control
A two-wheel ebike still needs to be balanced while starting, stopping, and moving slowly. Motor assistance can help the bike move, but it does not restore balance or compensate for delayed reactions.
A trike remains upright at a stop, which can help riders who are uncomfortable supporting a two-wheel bike.
However, a trike does not lean naturally through turns. It should be slowed before cornering, and slopes or road camber can affect how it feels. A trike can still tip when turned too quickly or ridden unevenly.
Getting On and Off
A step-through frame can reduce the height a rider must clear, but the term “step-through” is not a complete fit measurement.
Compare the actual standover height, minimum saddle height, and distance to the handlebars. The rider should be able to mount and dismount without catching a foot or twisting uncomfortably.

The rider needs to reach the brake levers, stop predictably, and place a foot down with control.

The National Institute on Aging notes that moderate activities such as cycling are safe for most people with chronic conditions when they build up gradually. It also recommends discussing exercise with a healthcare professional when a condition may affect activity.
Consider seeking individualized advice before riding if you experience dizziness, fainting, chest discomfort, unusual shortness of breath, uncontrolled pain, major balance changes, or limitations following surgery or a recent injury.
Medication effects, neurological conditions, vision changes, and a history of falls may also affect safe riding.
A healthcare professional can help assess health-related exercise concerns. Bike fit, handling ability, and the safety of the intended riding environment still need to be evaluated separately.
