Vermont designates three classes of electric bicycles:

Class 1: Bicycle equipped with a motor that provides assistance only when the rider is pedaling, and that ceases to provide assistance when the electric bicycle reaches 20 mph.

Class 2: Bicycle equipped with a throttle-actuated motor, that ceases to provide assistance when the electric bicycle reaches 20 mph.

Class 3: Bicycle equipped with a motor that provides assistance only when the rider is pedaling, and that ceases to provide assistance when the electric bicycle reaches 28 mph

Do you need a license, insurance or registration in Vermont?

The state of Vermont does not have licensing and registration requirements for electric bikes.

What are the restrictions on Motor power or throttle in Vermont?

The state of Vermont (VT)  defines electric bikes as any bicycle or tricycle with fully operable pedals and equipped with a motor that has a power output of not more than 1,000w or 1.3 horsepower.

Are there any age restrictions to riding an electric bike in Vermont?

Persons under 16 years of age may not operate a Class 3 electric bicycle but they may ride as a passenger.

Helmets are required for bike riders under 16 years old.
